With Los Angeles in the rearview mirror, Atlanta took center stage in this weeks episode of American Ninja Warrior. No women advanced from qualifying, so none competed in last nights show.?So instead of recapping the womens performances, we talked to one of Atlantas rising stars.Erica Cook, 27, whos based in Gainesville, Florida, fell on the Spin Cycle, the fifth obstacle, in Atlanta qualifying last month. At only 5-feet tall, she misjudged the reach and her shorter wingspan didnt provide her with room to compensate, sending her into the water.I just made a rookie mistake, not a physical one, Cook said in a phone interview. I just didnt prep well enough. I should have thought out what I was going to do... It was an impulsive decision that didnt work out in my favor.Cook burst on the scene during the spin-off show Team Ninja Warrior, joining ninja greats (and roommates) Drew Drechsel and James McGrath. Each team competing on TNW was required to have a woman and Cook fell in with them.I submitted for [American Ninja Warrior] Season 7 in Orlando and didnt get selected, but I went down there for course testing. I met them through that, Cook said. When Team Ninja Warrior came around, they remembered me from course testing and they needed a girl. She proved her chops by conquering the Warped Wall that season, and joining the handful of women who have successfully beaten the towering obstacle. The ANW course and general environment, however, are different, which is a big adjustment from TNW.Being new, its not a question of if you can do it, but if you can do it on the first try, Cook said. Ive only been doing this for less than 12 months, so I know that I have to be mindful of not knowing what everything is going to feel like when I touch it. Drew [Drechsel], Jessie [Graff], and James [McGrath] have been doing this for a couple of years, so they can anticipate how things will react, which is something I dont have the experience for yet. When Cook began training for ANW, she was inspired by Kacy Catanzaro, Meagan Martin, Michelle Warnky and Jessie Graff -- all of whom have put more than a couple of cracks in the proverbial glass ceiling of ninja competition. In her rookie year, Cooks competing during one of the most compelling seasons for women since the show began airing.Whats cool about this season is that there are a lot of really impressive women, and its starting to lessen the gender gap, Cook said. Im sure watching now and how its evolving, theres so many more women and kids saying, Look at what these girls are capable of -- why cant we do that too?Cook and the other women of Atlanta may not be done yet. Being one of just eight women to ever make it up the Warped Wall, as well as making it to the fifth obstacle during qualifying, might be enough to grant her a wild card invitation to the national finals in Las Vegas.Heres the breakdown for the rest of the regional.Atlanta city finals specs:Finishers: 4Female finishers: 0Women moving on: 0New or modified obstacles on second half of course: 1 out of 4The course:Were into city finals episodes, where the first six obstacles remain the same as in each of the city qualifiers (except for a couple of tweaks). In city finals, the course builders added four obstacles on the second portion of the course (which well review below), bringing the total number of obstacles to 10.?The first obstacle on the second part of each city finals course will be the Salmon Ladder -- unless theres a huge surprise. Ninjas hang from a bar and must propel themselves upward to jump the bar up a series of rungs. The eighth obstacle is a goodie brought back from last season: the Floating Monkey Bars. Ninjas grab hold of two bars and use momentum to swing, as if on monkey bars at a playground. The trick is they must carry the bars with them, placing them a set of grips in order to move forward. This ninth obstacle is brutal. Its a new one called the Clacker. Ninjas hold on to pegs attached to bars. Using upper body strength and momentum, they push upwards to flip, or clack, them to the other side. They do that all the way down the obstacle until they are able to dismount to the next platform. The Invisible Ladder returns as the 10th obstacle. This will remain the same on each city finals course. Ninjas grab rings suspended from a hole in a platform and pull. When their movement stops, the ring catches their weight so that it looks like they are pulling themselves up a ladder, through the hole at the top of the finishing platform.Looking forward:Next week, were in Indianapolis, where Meagan Martin (and others) await! Martin had a great run in qualifying, but while shes consistently performed well at that level, shes historically struggled on the finals courses. How she performs next week will decide if she punches her own ticket to Vegas. Chris Tierney Senators Jersey .
