ALAMEDA, Calif. -- Olympic gold medalist Tommie Smith, whose raised-fist salute on the medal stand at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics was seen as a flash point in the civil rights movement, will light the Al Davis torch in memory of the late Oakland Raiders owner before Monday nights game at Mexico Citys Estadio Azteca against the Houston Texans. The torch is lit before every game, and this time, it will shine in Mexico City. It will only be Smiths second trip to Mexico City since those 1968 Summer Games, and he will travel with the team on its flight there. This is a very, very historic moment for me, Smith told ESPN.com on Wednesday. To do it for the Raiders, I have a lot of respect for the things that they do. The Raiders have always been out in front in terms of change. They were always called a renegade team. But look what the renegade team brought to light.Tom Flores was the first Latino head coach to win a Super Bowl, with the Raiders. The team also hired the first African-American coach in Art Shell, as well as the first female CEO in Amy Trask. This feels like its come full circle, Smith said.Raiders owner Mark Davis said that Smith lighting the torch in Mexico City was not a move motivated by politics, but rather, he said, Smith was a hero of his since his protest 48 years ago. When Tommie Smith and John Carlos raised their fists, it touched me, Davis said. A 13-year-old kid growing up in the Bay Area, which was a hotbed of all kinds of things. We had Peoples Park. The Black Panthers. The Hells Angels. Berkeley had Telegraph Avenue and San Francisco had the Haight. So it was a hotbed of social activism, and then there was the war in Vietnam. It felt like it was the right time and the right moment and it fell in place. It was awesome, and it will always be a moment that will stick with me.Davis asked Smith this spring to light the torch in memory of his father. The torch has been lit by former players -- including Bo Jackson, Jim Plunkett and Hall of Famers Marcus Allen, Howie Long and John Madden -- representatives of military branches and local law enforcement, as well as actress Ann-Margret, who is family friend.Smith, who ran track at San Jose State and played briefly in the AFL as a receiver with the Cincinnati Bengals in 1969, has come back into the spotlight in recent weeks with the likes of Colin Kaepernicks protest during the national anthem.Athletes using the First Amendment to voice their opinion for social change, Smith said, has come a long way.I had a responsibility, Smith said, and I still do. To do this for someone like Al Davis and the Raiders is the pinnacle of what I believe in. Alvin Kamara Youth Jersey . A statement from the worlds top-ranked player says all checks "were satisfactory and showed positive evolution" regarding the injury, which contributed to his loss to Stanislas Wawrinka in the final in Melbourne. METAIRIE, La. -- The New Orleans Saints placed cornerback P.J. Williams on injured reserve Wednesday after he was carted off the field with a concussion on Sunday. Its unclear whether Williams suffered any injuries beyond the concussion. Saints coach Sean Payton and Williams agent, Deryk Gilmore, both said Monday that Williams diagnosis was encouraging after he spent the night in a New York-area hospital for evaluation.Williams is unlikely to return this season, since the Saints can return only one player from injured reserve -- and they will likely use that designation on defensive tackle Sheldon Rankins when he is eligible after the first eight weeks.Williams was down on the field for several tense minutes Sunday before he was immobilized against a backboard, with his helmet strapped down, and lifted onto a cart. He appeared to have been hit by two knees to the head -- the first from the leg of New York Giants tight end Larry Donnell and the second from Saints teammate Craig Robertson in the back of his helmet.Players from both teams immediately waved for trainers to come onto the field and showed support and concern for Williams while he was being evaluated. Its a concussion, but yet its one significant enough that you wouldnt really see on a normal basis, Payton said Thursday. Hell be able to make a full recovery, hell be able to return to football in the offseason. And yet, I would say probably one of the more severe concussions that Ive seen.Hes doing better, Payton continued. None of this will carry over and limit him in any way in the future. This is the second time Williams has been placed on injured reserve in his young career since being drafted in the third round out of Florida State in 2015.dddddddddddd. He missed all of last season with a hamstring injury. Then he won a starting job this summer, only to go back on IR after two starts. The Saints cornerback position has been ravaged by injury. Their top cornerback, Delvin Breaux, suffered a broken fibula in Week 1 that is expected to keep him out for at least six weeks. Veteran Keenan Lewis was released during the preseason after a setback with his lingering hip injury. Backups Damian Swann and Kyle Wilson were placed on IR during the summer. That leaves New Orleans with recently signed veterans Sterling Moore and B.W. Webb and undrafted rookies?DeVante Harris?and Ken Crawley heading into this weeks matchup against star receiver?Julio Jones and the Atlanta Falcons.Thats not great considering the Saints secondary was struggling even when it was healthier last year. The Saints set NFL records for TD passes allowed in a season (45) and opponents passer rating (116.1).The good news is that New Orleans makeshift lineup played surprisingly well against the Giants and receiver?Odell Beckham Jr.?in Week 2. Although QB?Eli Manning threw for 368 yards, the Giants didnt score an offensive touchdown in their 16-13 win over the Saints.New Orleans replaced Williams on the roster by re-signing veteran offensive tackle Tony Hills, who has been on and off the roster since last year. Saints right tackle Zach Strief left Sundays game early with an unspecified injury. Hills could be needed as an alternative. ' ' '
