INDIANAPOLIS - Oscar and Eden Hazard scored first-half goals, leading Chelsea to a 2-0 victory over Inter Milan on Thursday night in a quarterfinal match at the Guinness International Champions Cup. Despite not starting four of its stars that played in the Confederations Cup, including Brazils David Luiz and Spains Juan Mata, Chelsea nonetheless at times looked to be in midseason form in the exhibition match before a crowd of 41,983 at Lucas Oil Stadium. Hazards came on a penalty kick in the 29th minute. Although an exhibition, the inaugural eight-team, 12-game International Champions Cup is being staged to promote some of Europes best while offering the teams a chance to prepare for their league seasons that begin at the end of the month. "Oscar has been with us for five days because of the Confederations Cup," Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho said. "Weve worked a lot on our movement, and it will help us in difficult situations. Its good to see in matches what I see in training. I want him to be a top player, not just a top talent." Chelsea advances to play AC Milan in the semifinals Sunday at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J. Inter Milan will play Valencia, a 2-1 loser to AC Milan in its quarterfinal match last weekend, in the tournaments consolation semifinal earlier Sunday at MetLife. The other clubs in the tournament are Everton, Juventus, Real Madrid and the Los Angeles Galaxy - the only MLS team participating. Real Madrid beat the Galaxy 3-1 in their quarterfinal Thursday in Glendale, Ariz. The championship final is Wednesday in Miami Gardens, Fla. As the tournaments only Midwestern venue, the match was considered groundbreaking for a city that has struggled to support professional soccer in the past. It was the first soccer game ever held at Lucas Oil, the 5-year-old home stadium for the NFLs Indianapolis Colts. It was also the first time a natural grass surface was laid inside the stadium, thanks to more than 100,000-square feet of Kentucky Bluegrass that was trucked in last weekend. Indianapolis will give pro soccer another try next year with the Indy Eleven joining the North American Soccer League in 2014. The team will be Indys ninth pro or semi-pro team since 1973. On Thursday night, it proudly hung its banner in the middle of the Colts horseshoe on the north side of the stadium. "Its nice that people can come to downtown Indianapolis to see international quality soccer rather than have to go to New York, Chicago or Los Angeles," said Juergen Sommer, coach of the Indy Eleven. "People really get it. The fan base for soccer is undersold here." The match featured intrigue on the sidelines with Mourinho coaching against his former team for the first time since his two-year stint with Inter Milan from 2008-10. Mourinho, who managed Chelsea from 2004-07, returned to the Blues on June 2 after managing Spains Real Madrid the past three seasons. Soccer supporters in London are fond of the Portuguese coach, who dubbed himself "Special One" on the first day of his first stint with the team. He then led Chelsea to two Premier League titles and one FA Cup. They no doubt hope that Mourinho can bring the magic touch back to Chelsea this time around. Although it captured the Europa League title in May, one London daily newspaper labeled it "small beer" for a club that went into the 2012-13 season as defending Champions League winners. The Blues were eliminated in the tournaments group stage this past season. Mourinho also didnt start Fernando Torres and Cesar Azpilicueta of Spain. All players subbed into play in the second half. For new Inter coach Walter Mazzarri, who is trying to improve the Italian side after it finished ninth in the league last season, the game also gave him a chance to work recent acquisitions Mauro Icardi and Hugo Campagnaro into the team. Campagnaro was issued a red card in the 58th minute. "The first half was very good for both sides," Mourinho said. "The red card changed (the game) completely. Not good for them because they played with 10, and not good for us, because we played against 10." Chelsea dominated nearly from start to finish. Two minutes after Inters Fredy Guarin almost volleyed in a shot past Chelsea keeper Petr Cech, Chelsea went up 1-0 on a goal by Brazilian star Oscar in the 13th minute after he capitalized on teammate Victor Moses powerful run through the midfield. The pro-Chelsea crowd roared as Oscars shot settled into the top right-hand corner of the net after Moses slipped him the ball. Chelsea then went up 2-0 in the 29th minute on a penalty kick by Hazard. Paul George Shoes For Sale . PITTSBURGH -- The near-misses still eat at Pat Narduzzi. As good as the Pittsburgh coach feels about his team as it heads into Saturdays regular-season finale against Syracuse, the memory of the ones that got away still linger. When you look at our losses, theyre like this, Narduzzi said Monday, putting his thumb and index finger an inch apart. Its interesting we didnt get (them). I look back at how close we are to winning them all. God if we had done this as coaches, maybe we would have won every one of those games.Outside of a second half meltdown at Miami earlier this month, hes right. Pitts three other losses -- to Oklahoma State, Virginia Tech and North Carolina -- were by a combined 11 points.Yet Narduzzi and the Panthers (7-4, 4-3) have done an excellent job of not getting caught up in what might have been. Theyre surging toward the finish line following a 56-14 romp over Duke last weekend that may have been their most complete performance in Narduzzis two-year tenure. And while Pitt still needs to beat Syracuse (4-7, 2-5) to match its eight-win total of last season, the feeling this time around is decidedly different.Without a doubt, its a much better group, Narduzzi said. One that didnt let the raw emotions of disappointment bleed from one Saturday to the next, something Narduzzi credited in part to the maturity of a team featuring 19 seniors and 16 redshirt juniors. It tells you what kind of leadership we have, that (finishing strong) is what theyre talking about, not girls and where theyre going tonight, he said.Knowing the offense is going to find innovative ways to move the ball week in and week out certainly helped. The Panthers have already set a school record for points in a season (432) with two more games to go thanks to the creative tinkering by first-year offensive coordinator Matt Canada. A unit that began the year with no proven playmakers at wide receiver is averaging 39.27 points..dddddddddddd. Pitt has thrived behind junior running back James Conner, steady play by senior quarterback Nate Peterman, do-everything wide receiver/returner Quadree Henderson and a seemingly endless variety of formations designed to highlight mismatches and take advantage of a big and experienced offensive line. You come in on Mondays, you dont know what (Canada is) going to throw at you, offensive tackle Adam Bisnowaty said. All the motion we do, you just never know what hes going to do. Sometimes I feel he sits in that offense a little too long (and) draws up some plays that are unreal. They just seem to work. The Panthers have needed them to work while one of the nations worst pass defenses figured things out. Even after holding Duke to 243 yards through the air, Pitt is still 127th in the nation against the pass. Yet that hasnt stopped it from being on the cusp of winning eight games in consecutive seasons for the first time since 2008-2009.Its a different world (than when I got here in 2012), Bisnowaty said. I think the program is about winning ... My first year we won six games or so, last year we won eight. This year we have a chance to win more than that. Its just going back to playing the best football we can play.Game notes Conner was named the winner of the 2016 Disney Sports Spirit Award on Monday. The award is given annually to the nations most inspirational player. Conner was diagnosed with cancer last Thanksgiving and went through months of draining chemotherapy but has returned to the form that helped him capture the 2014 ACC Player of the Year. Conner became the ACCs all-time leading touchdown scorer last week when his two scored against Duke gave him 53 on his career.---More AP college football: www.collegefootball.ap.org and https://twitter.com/AP-Top25 ' ' '
